Two founders, one showroom and a bet on Accra

Two brand founders review a lookbook in their showroom

On a Thursday afternoon in Airport Residential, Efua Boateng and Zainab Salifu are hunched over a lookbook spread across a showroom table, arguing gently about whether a burnt-orange kaftan reads better next to the beadwork pieces or on its own rail. The disagreement is a small one. The bet underneath it is not: the two designers, who ran separate labels out of separate cities for most of the last decade, have just opened a joint showroom in Accra, wagering that the city's luxury retail scene has finally caught up to their prices.

Boateng, 39, built her label in Kumasi over twelve years, known for structured tailoring in kente-adjacent wax prints. Salifu, 36, spent most of that time in Lagos, designing eveningwear for a private client list before deciding Lagos's showroom rents no longer made sense for a business her size. The two had known each other for years through the trade-fair circuit before deciding, over a phone call last December, to split the cost of a single Accra space rather than each open separately.

"We were both circling the same city for the same reason, so it made no sense to compete for the same landlord," Salifu said. "Accra has the income now, and it doesn't have enough showrooms that treat West African design as luxury rather than souvenir. We wanted to be early to that, together, rather than late to it alone."

Three months in, the showroom has logged more private appointments than either label was averaging separately in Lagos or Kumasi, and the two are already discussing a second joint space, this time in Abidjan.
